Modification Background

Recycled ABS (Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene) undergoes thermal oxidative aging, mechanical shearing and UV degradation during processing, resulting in a significant decrease in impact strength (usually only about 50% of the virgin material). The core goal of improving impact strength is to restore the impact strength of the material so that it meets the requirements of industrial applications (such as automotive parts and electronic housings require notched impact strength>15 kJ/m²). For every 2 kJ/m² increase in impact strength, the price of recycled ABS increases by 70USD-150USD/ton.

1. Cost and Production Complexity

Base Impact of Recycled ABS is 7-14 kJ/m² (Virgin is 20-25 kJ/m²).

• 1: 8-10 kJ/m²: Usually it is simply recycled, only basic cleaning and granulation, no impact modifier added. Therefore it is with low cost and poor performance.
• 2: 12-14 kJ/m²: 5%-10% impact modifier (such as ABS high-rubber powder Kumho HR181) needs to be added, and a compatibilizer (such as SMA) needs to be used. The process needs to accurately control the dispersion.
• 3: ≥16 kJ/m²: Composite modification (such as ABS high-rubber powder + nano-CaCO3) or alloying with engineering plastics (such as PA6) is required. The process is complex and the raw material cost is higher.

• 2. Market Application Scenarios and Premium Logic

   

• 1: 8-10 kJ/m²: used for low-end daily necessities (such as hangers, flower pots), price-sensitive market, small premium space.
• 2: 12-14 kJ/m²: general-purpose housing (electrical accessories, tool handles), large demand, stable price.
• 3: ≥16 kJ/m²: automotive interior (impact resistance, low VOC), high-gloss panels, because they meet IATF 16949 and other standards, the premium is significant.
• 4: Meanwhile, the addition of antioxidants , deodorizers and etc will add value as well for high impact ABS.
